saving tricks for students

By now we are all well aware of the fact that living in Delhi as a student is no easy feat. Whether you are new to this city or have been staying here for a while, as a student you will mostly be treading lightly in terms of expenditure. Not only are you expected to create a budget, but you also need to follow through with it during your stay in the city. But it does not need to be as dreary as it sounds especially because there are numerous simple tips and tricks that you can follow to not only maintain your budget but also save up money month on month.

We have compiled a list of tips that can help you save money and at the same time live your best life in Delhi, cause we know better than anyone else that being college a student only comes along once or maybe twice for a few exceptions.

1)Create a budget

First things first, create a budget right as you move into the city. Out of the total pocket money you receive, figure out how much you can distribute to each aspect such as rent, entertainment, books, transportation and more as per your priorities. For instance, the budget for books and food should be decided before picking a budget for leisure activities. If you don’t know where to start creating a budget, you can simply download an app such as Goodbudget or Monefy on your phone or even simpler, just maintain an excel sheet.

2)Track your expenses

The next step to creating a budget is sticking to it and that is most easily done by tracking your expenses. Whether you are heading out to any cafe or just simply buying a course book try to make a note of the expenditure or compile all your expenses at the end of the day in an app. This part of saving money is pretty easy to do especially with UPI apps in place that has all big or small spending details in one place. Tracking all your expenses might seem like a tedious task once you start, but in the long run, it helps you budget better as you are aware of the amount you have spent and what is left with you.

3)Opt for a co-living space

One of the biggest expenses in Delhi is your accommodation followed closely by your daily meals, transportation and other expenses. Since rental apartments are as expensive in the capital city as ever, you should opt for co-living student housing including ours. With us at your-space, you can find student rooms at the best price in Delhi which is inclusive of room charges, home-style meals, laundry, housekeeping, security and other amenities. Once you have paid the monthly rent at your-space, several of your expenses are catalogued and you can carry on budgeting other expenses that you might have.

4)Try street shopping

Living in a city like Delhi comes with umpteen benefits including the best educational institutions, amazing career opportunities, plenty of entertainment options and endless shopping options. The capital city is home to some amazing street markets such as Sarojini Nagar, Kamla Nagar and Khan Market which cater to all your shopping needs without burning a significant hole in your pocket. If you are living in one of our affordable PG in North Campus Delhi or our best co-living space in Kailash Colony, then these markets are easily accessible.

5)Second-Hand/Rented Books

College books are expensive. An easy alternative to saving up money on this aspect of college life is renting your books, using your library card as frequently as possible and investing in second-hand books. Considering some of the course books are only relevant for a semester, it is better to rent them or pick up used ones.

6)Look for student discounts

Your college ID card holds a good amount of power that can earn you some awesome discounts on shopping, movies, a premium Spotify subscription and restaurants. So make sure to carry your college ID wherever you go and don’t shy away from asking if they run any offers curated especially for students.

7)Side hustle galore

This step does not technically save money from your budget but it adds money to it. There are plenty of side hustles that you can take up as a student for that extra cash. They don’t take up much time and can be easily pursued remotely. If you are unsure of where to start your side hustle journey, you can read our blog on it here – Side Hustles To Check Out As A Student.

8)Public/shared transportation

Living near your college can help you save up a lot of money as a student and our PGs in Delhi are strategically located keeping in mind this aspect. However, college is not the only place you will visit in the city. To travel around Delhi, nothing beats public transportation including the metro and buses. For short distances, the city also has numerous options including autos and e-rickshaws that you can opt for. After all who doesn’t like to save up on transportation?

While budgeting is necessary, it should not hold you back from living your best life as a student. So just simply start implementing these tips and you will be good to go!
