15 tips to kickstart your college life(online)

So you are all set to begin the new chapter of your life. Away from the close-knit High School community, you will now experience a completely different life as you enter college. These four years will be some of the most memorable years of your life.

You will expose yourself to new surroundings, new friends, a new city or maybe a new country. It is very normal to be scared and confused about how to go about this new stage of life. But, if you follow these simple tips, you should be able to sail through smoothly!

Here are a few tips which will help you settle down into this new phase of your life!

1. Have the right balance:

First things first. Studying and chilling are both parts of the student experience, but try to strike an equal balance. It’s an exciting time!! you have got into a new routine, and will make new friends, a new schedule, and experience everything college life has to offer. But it’s also important to give yourself some time and plan things accordingly. Maintain the right balance between studying and leisure. We bet you need both!

2. Relax and enjoy.

Over the next few years, you will make many lifelong friends, memories, and qualifications that you will go to tag yourself forever with. Make sure you enjoy every bit of college life and do nothing in a hurry. Always stay calm and relax, good things take time. Enjoy your college life to the fullest so that you don’t regret later.

Adapting to a new routine can be stressful, so it is essential to know where to find help if you need it. Don’t be shy to ask for help.

Every college takes responsibility for its students and helps them navigate through issues like finance and health. You can always reach out to your seniors and professors to help you guide your way through everything. If they can’t directly help you, they will refer you to someone who can. Remember, you always got their back!

4. Take Every Opportunity Available

There is a lot more to explore in college than just course work. Be open to new opportunities to make your college experience better. Every college provides a good range of opportunities either in social/ curricular or in an educational context. College life is the perfect time to try out new things, whether it’s joining a sports team, signing up for society, taking part in a volunteering scheme, or learning a foreign language.

You never know what doors these experiences will open. By the time you graduate from college, you will impress future employers with these external pursuits.

5. Don’t do things that don’t feel right.

Never hesitate in saying “No”. In college life, you will come across people and activities you are not comfortable with. You should never hesitate in taking your stand. Always do things which you are comfortable with and do not get in touch with people, things, or activities that you think will harm you. Be clear about your values and your own rules and don’t hesitate to say No if anyone forces or requests you to do something which you feel you shouldn’t.

Make sure you have a balanced regime, try to get a decent night’s sleep, don’t party too much and look after your mental health, too. Meditation can help you stay calm and relaxed.

7. Know your Campus

You should consider your college campus as your home. As you know everything about your home, the same way you should know everything about your campus. No matter if your campus is spread across the city or is self-contained, it can be all too common to get lost from time to time. Try to become familiar with the campus as soon as you join. Explore the campus during breaks and free time. This will help to take the stress away from getting to your lectures on time and not be late while searching for your class. Although this may not be possible for now with online classes, you will get to explore your college campus once on-campus classes start.

8. Choose the right people.

Some people make friends with people who are only good looking or smart. But that’s not how you build a life-long relationship. You should make friends with those whom you are comfortable with. Don’t get influenced by a person’s external characters. This is where you will really learn to judge people and understand people better.

9.Remember, You Are Not Alone!

You may feel low sometimes, you may feel sad, you may have a bad day but remember, you are not alone. Everyone here is to help you, support you and motivate you. Never feel demotivated or lonely with something unpleasant. With a few rotten apples in the barrel, do not forget you also get a few good ones!

Treat online college the way you’d treat your normal college. Your education is important so scheduling the right time each day to focus on it can really make a difference. This schedule allows you to get everything done without feeling like you neglected anything. Wake up the same time every day, engage in your usual routine. Plan your schedule, Dedicate a specific amount of time each day or each week to studying and commit to it. This will help to formalize online experience, but it’s a good way to prevent the responsibilities of work, life, and school from piling up at once.

Even if the idea of working in a bustling coffee shop seems awesome, it may not be the best working environment. Everybody works and thrives differently. But, the point is you need to define a space that both stimulates and motivates without pulling attention away from your studies. As part of establishing a routine, create a space that makes you feel studious, energetic, and focused.

When it comes to online education, the main thing is to get good internet connectivity that doesn’t mean you attend it anywhere. Have a proper, clean and organised work desk and do not attend sitting on the sofa or bed which will make you sleepy.

It’s always fun to get lost in your social media feed be it Snapchat, Facebook or Instagram but when it comes to getting a college degree, that red “heart” gets shoved to the wayside for studying! There are enough distractions around in the real don’t add more in the virtual world. It’s easy to lose track of time scrolling through your friend’s vacation photos, celebrities new photoshoot pictures, or going through all the trends going around be it the grown-up challenge or the makeup brush challenge.

See, if you can install apps that limit your time on social media. Limit yourself to 1-2 hrs every day during your free time.

Last but not the least, write down important points. Just like in a traditional classroom setting, taking notes may make it easier to remember the important pieces of information you will need to retain. You may find the same thing in your book, but there’s definitely an advantage to taking your own notes.

You may feel webinar or online class fatigue quite often. Make sure you take a good amount of breaks in between each lecture and look away from the screen from time-to-time.

15. Do things that make you happy.

While you have a full load of projects and assignments, its good to take out time with ṣyour family or to pursue a hobby. If you like to cook or paint, you must take the time to do it. Make sure you video call your college mates and be a part of all the virtual parties and fests where you don’t have to think about your outfit.
