Engineering is one of the toughest fields to get into in India. To study engineering one must pass the national level examination JEE (some colleges may have their entrance exam) after their class 12 boards. With limited seats at prestigious institutes, lakhs of students compete for the few thousand seats available. If you are one of the aspirants looking forward to studying engineering then you are at the right place because today we will be listing out the top 21 engineering colleges in India.

The list is based on the NIRF ranking 2020.

 

1) IIT Madras (Indian Institute of Technology):

Indian Institute of Technology Madras also abbreviated as IIT Madras is one of the premier public technical and research universities in India in the city of Chennai. As it is one of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), it has been recognized as an Institute of National Importance. IIT Madras was founded in 1959 with financial and technical aid from the former government of West Germany. IIT Madras is also the third IIT established by the Government of India. IIT Madras has been ranked as the #1 engineering institute in India for five consecutive years from 2016–2020 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. IIT Madras is a residential academy that occupies 0.97 sq miles or 2.5-square-kilometre campus that was formerly part of the neighbouring Guindy National Park. The academy has about 10,000 students, 600 faculty, and 1,250 supporting and administrative staff. It has been growing ever since the obtainment of its charter in 1961 from the Indian Parliament, most of the campus area is a protected forest, marked out of the Guindy National Park.

2) IIT Delhi (Indian Institute of Technology):

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi also abridged as IIT Delhi is one of the pre-eminent public technical and research universities located in Hauz Khas of Delhi, India. It is also the 5th oldest Indian Institutes of Technology in India and was established in the year 1961. The academy was formally unveiled in August 1961 by the Minister of Scientific Research & Cultural Affairs Prof. Humayun Kabir. The first batch of students was admitted in 1961. Currently, the campus has an area of 1.2 square kilometres or 320 acres and is enclosed by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Complex on the west, Sri Aurobindo Marg on the east, the New Ring Road on the north, and the National Council of Educational Research and Training on the south, and flanked by Qutub Minar and the Hauz Khas monuments. The institute was later pronounced in Institutes of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology Amendment Act, 1963 and granted the status of a full-fledged University with powers to conduct its examinations, decide its academic policy, and award its degrees. In 2018 IIT Delhi was also awarded the honour of Institution of Eminence (IoE) by the Government of India granting the academy almost full autonomy.

3) IIT Bombay (Indian Institute of Technology):

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay also abridged as IIT Bombay is one of the pre-eminent public technical and research universities in India located in Powai, Mumbai. The Institute was established in 1958 and later in the year 1961, the India Parliament pronounced the IITs as Institutes of National Importance. The first batch of students was admitted in the year 1958. Since its establishment in 1958, the academy has physically grown to include more than 584 major buildings with a combined area of more than 0.84 square miles. IIT Bombay is known for its 2 Year, 4 Year, and 5 Year programs for which the entry is through the Joint Entrance Examination(JEE) – Advanced and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It offers degrees such as; 2 or 3 Year Master of Technology, Five Year Master of Science, a Bachelor of Technology, Four Year Bachelor of Science, and a few others. It also has an all-inclusive graduate program offering doctoral degrees in Engineering, Science, Technology, and Mathematics. At present, it has a total of about 20 centres, 15 academic departments, one school of excellence, and four interdisciplinary programs as well as a Management Program.

4) IIT Kanpur (Indian Institute of Technology):

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur also reduced ad IIT Kanpur is one of the pre-eminent public technical and research universities in India, located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Kanpur. It has been proclaiming to be an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the Institutes of Technology Act. Founded in 1959 it is one of the first Indian Institutes of Technology, the institute was brought into existence with the aid of a consortium of nine US research universities as part of KIAP also expanded as Kanpur Indo-American Programme.

5) IIT Kharagpur (Indian Institute of Technology):

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur also abridged as IIT Kharagpur is one of the pre-eminent public technical and research universities in India. It was set up by the government of India in Kharagpur of West Bengal, India. It is the first IIT to be established in 1951 and is also recognized as one of the Institute of National Importance. Recently it was awarded the status of Institute of Eminence by the government of India in 2019. The institute was first set up to train scientists and engineers after India attained its independence in 1947. Through the years, the institute’s academic competence have seen great growth and has branched out and diversified to humanities, management, law, architecture, etc. IIT Kharagpur has 2,100-acres of land as its campus (8.7-square-kilometre) and has about 22,000 residents.

6) IIT Roorkee (Indian Institute of Technology):

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee also abridged as either IIT Roorkee or IITR is one of the pre-eminent public technical and research universities of India. It is located in Roorkee in the state of Uttarakhand and is headed by Director Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi. It was previously called the University of Roorkee from 1949 to 2001 and before that, it was knowns as Thomason College of Civil Engineering from 1847 to 1949. The institutes were established in 1847 during British India by the then lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason making it the oldest technical institution in the Asia continent. The institute was granted university status in 1949 and was later declared the seventh IIT Indian Institute of Technology in 2001. IIT Roorkee has over 22 academic departments covering Humanities & Social Sciences, Engineering, Applied Sciences, and Management programs with prominence on scientific and technological education and research.

7) IIT Guwahati (Indian Institute of Technology):

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati also abridged as IIT Guwahati is one of the pre-eminent public technical and research universities established by the Government of India. It is located in the state of Assam in North East India. It is the sixth oldest Indian Institute of Technology established in India. IIT Guwahati is accredited as one of the Institute of National Importance by the government of India. It was ranked 7th both in overall and Engineering category released the NIRF India 2020 rankings on 11th June 2020.

8) IIT Hyderabad (Indian Institute of Technology):

Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad also abridged as either IIT Hyderabad or IITH is one of the pre-eminent public technical and research universities located in Sangareddy district of Telangana state in India. It is one of the eight young Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and was established in 2008. It has 893 PhD students, 1,155 undergraduate students, 635 Masters’s students, and a total of 222 full-time faculties.

9) NIT Trichy (National Institute of Technology):

National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli also abridged as either NIT Trichy or NITT is one of the pre-eminent public technical and research universities of India. It is located near the city of Tiruchirappalli in the state of Tamil Nadu. The institute was founded in the year 1964 and is one of India’s oldest technical universities. The academy has a campus area of 3.24 km² or 800 acres. The university is accredited as one of the Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 and is one of the representatives of the National Institutes of Technology also abridged as NITs system. The university emphasizes exclusively architecture, management, science, technology, and engineering. Its NIRF ranking in 2020 was 1st among all the NITs, 8th for architecture, 9th for engineering, 35th for management, and 24th overall in India. FICCI named the university the “University of the Year” in 2017. The university has academic and research competitions with universities and research centres in India and abroad involving the United States and the United Kingdom and is undergoing accelerated growth through the World Bank-funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Program also abridged as TEQIP.

10) Indian Institute of Technology, Indore:

IIT Indore is one of the pre-eminent autonomous public technical and research institutes in India and is located in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. IIT Indore is among the eight young Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and was established in 2009. IIT Indore is accredited as one of the Institute of National Importance by the Government of India.

11) IIT Varanasi (Indian Institute of Technology):

Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi also abridged as IIT BHU is one of the public technical and research universities of India, located in the state of Uttar Pradesh in Varanasi district. The institute was established in 1919 as the Banaras Engineering College, later in 1968, it was upgraded to the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University. The institute was accredited as one of the Indian Institute of Technology in 2012. IIT (BHU) Varanasi has 1 Humanities & Social Sciences Section and 16 departments, with 3 inter-disciplinary schools. The institute is located inside the Banaras Hindu University Campus, however, it is autonomous of it.

12) Indian Institute of Technology (ISM), Dhanbad:

Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad also abridged as IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is one of the pre-eminent public technical and research universities in India. The institute is located in Dhanbad, India. The main campus has 0.88 square kilometre or 218 acres of land in Sardar Patel Nagar area of Dhanbad and recently Jharkhand Cabinet ratifies 226.98 acres or 0.91 square kilometres of land in Nirsa for its second campus, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad administration has proposed to open more than 29 academic centres in this upcoming campus in Nirsa, Dhanbad. IIT ISM has been recognized as one of the Institute of National Importance. IIT (ISM) has 18 academic departments covering Management programs, Humanities and Social Sciences, Engineering, and Applied Sciences. Earlier it was known as the Indian School of Mines before its up-gradation to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Undergraduate students get admitted to IIT (ISM) Dhanbad through Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced), previously IIT-JEE.

13) National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal:

National Institute of Technology, Karnataka also abridged either as NITK or NITK Surathkal, was formerly known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College also abridged as KREC, is one of the pre-eminent public engineering universities in India. It is located in Mangalore at Surathkal. The institute was established in 1960 as KREC. Presently it is one of the 32 National Institutes of Technology in India and is accredited as one of the Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The academy has a suburban type of campus and is close to the Arabian Sea. National Highway 66 also runs through the campus and acts as the major mode of entry.

14) College of Engineering Guindy, Anna University:

The College of Engineering, Guindy also abridged as CEG is one of the pre-eminent public engineering colleges in India, Chennai. It was established in 1794 making it Asia’s oldest technical institution. It is Under Tamil Nadu State Government ownership and has a land area covering around 223 acres or 0.9 square kilometres of land right in the heart of Chennai. It also acts as the major campus of Anna Technological and Research University. CEG offers undergraduate Engineering degrees in various fields. Besides engineering, It also provides postgraduate programs such as M.S MBA, MCA, M.E., M.Sc. M.Tech by Research as well as PhD programs.

15) Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore:

Vellore Institute of Technology also abridged as VIT is a pre-eminent private deemed university located in Vellore, India. The institute was founded in 1984 by the name of Vellore Engineering College, by G. Viswanathan. The academy offers programs in 54 Undergraduate fields, 34 Postgraduate fields, 9 Integrated, 2 Research, and 2 M.Tech Industrial Programmes. It has 4 campuses; one each in Chennai, Vellore, Amravati, and Bhopal.

16) NIT Rourkela – National Institute of Technology:

National Institute of Technology, Rourkela also abridged either as NIT Rourkela or NITR was formerly known as Regional Engineering College. The academy is a publicly funded pre-eminent institute of higher learning for science, technology, and engineering located in the steel city of Rourkela, Odisha, India. NITR is recognized as one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India and has also been accredited as one of the Institute of National Importance by the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007. The NIRF ranked NITR as rank 16 in the NIRF Rankings 2020 of Indian engineering universities.

17) Jadavpur University:

Jadavpur University is one of the pre-eminent technical and research universities in India. It is located in the state of West Bengal in the city of Kolkata. The institute was founded in the year 1905. Jadavpur University has been Internationally ranked 651-700 by the QS World University Rankings in 2021. In 2020 It was ranked 801-1000 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

18) ICT Mumbai – Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai:

Institute of Chemical Technology also abridged as ICT is one of the pre-eminent public deemed universities of India located in Mumbai. The institute also has multiple campuses; Jalna, Marathwada and Bhubaneswar, Odisha. It has an emphasis on training and research in the fields of pharmacy, chemical engineering, and chemical technology. ICT was established in the year 1933 and was accredited as a deemed university in 2008. Thus becoming the only state-funded deemed university in India. Then on 12 February 2018, it was granted a status of Category 1 institute with graded autonomy by UGC and MHRD.

19) NIT Warangal – National Institute of Technology:

National Institute of Technology Warangal also abridged either as NIT Warangal or NITW is one of the pre-eminent public technological universities in India, Warangal. NITW is recognized as one of the Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The foundation stone for NITW was laid by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1959, making it the first NIT of the 32 NITs (formerly known as RECs) in the country. In 2002 institute was renamed the National Institute of Technology, Warangal.

20) Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University:

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham or Amrita University is a pre-eminent private, deemed-universities in India. The university is based in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu state, India. The NAAC has accredited A grade to Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, it is a multi-campus, multi-disciplinary teaching and research university and at present, it has over 7 campuses with about 16 constituent schools across the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. The headquarters is located at Ettimadai of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. 21) IIEST Shibpur – Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology:

Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur also abridged as IIEST Shibpur is one of the pre-eminent public technical and research universities in India. IIEST is located at Shibpur of Howrah district, West Bengal. IIEST is also recognized as one of the Institute of National Importance under MHRD by the Government of India. The academy is controlled by the Council of National Institutes of Technology. IIEST gives various undergraduate programs to the various engineering disciplines and architecture which are admitted through JEE Main. IIEST takes 50% of students coming from West Bengal and the other 50% from other parts of the country. Students from another discipline other than Architecture, on the basis of their performance, are given the chance to change their disciplines at the end of the 1st Year (i.e., second semester) and where they may also opt for dual degree (B.Tech.-M.Tech.) courses which extend over 10 semesters as per terms and conditions specified by the institute. For post-graduate programs, admission is through GATE for M.Tech. courses while for M.Sc and P.hD programs are admitted through Joint Entrance Screening Test twice a year through online applications.
